Pete Doherty arrested in Paris 'for buying cocaine'

Singer Pete Doherty has been arrested in Paris for buying cocaine, according to French authorities.

The songwriter was placed in detention during the night after being stopped by police while he was allegedly buying drugs.

The Paris prosecutor's office would not confirm French media reports that Doherty was carrying two grams of cocaine and was arrested in Pigalle, an area known for its late-night bars.

The 40-year-old is a frequent visitor to Paris and often performs in the French capital.

Doherty, who rose to fame with the band The Libertines, has fought a well-publicised battle with drug addiction and has been to rehab several times.

The musician now lives in Margate after opening a hotel with his Libertine bandmates.

In April, Doherty, who used to date supermodel Kate Moss, said he was recovering in hospital after suffering from an infection.

Doherty tweeted a photo from his hospital bedside, alongside the caption: "Me in a hospital bed with an infected hedgehog spike wound thank you to the wonderful men and women who work within the NHS.

"What absolute angels and a million times they deserve our respect and thanks."

Doherty released a new solo album with his project Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres earlier this year.
